Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer
Receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but this type of cancer is highly treatable. At Northwest Cancer Clinic, we offer several types of radiation treatment, including brachytherapy for prostate cancer. Our doctor, Dr. Juno Choe, has over 15 years of experience in radiation oncology and will consult with you to determine the best course of treatment.
What is Brachytherapy?
Brachytherapy is a treatment that involves placing radioactive material inside or near a tumor. This allows the radiation to conform to the size and shape of the tumor or organ, minimizing the effects of radiation on healthy tissue in the rest of the body. There are two kinds of brachytherapy: low dose rate, or LDR, and high dose rate, or HDR.
LDR Brachytherapy
Also known as prostate seed implantation, this is the most common form of brachytherapy used to treat prostate cancer. Tiny radioactive particles, or “seeds,” are implanted directly into the prostate. Each seed slowly releases radiation into the surrounding area, targeting and destroying cancerous cells. Over time, the radiation fades completely but the seeds will remain inside the prostate.
These seeds are smaller than a grain of rice and are implanted through a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The procedure doesn’t take a lot of time, and patients can return home after it’s done. Most patients resume normal activities the following day. Patients may experience some discomfort and urinary issues after the procedure, but these side effects are usually temporary.
Prostate seed implantation is one of the most effective treatments for prostate cancer, and we are proud to be one of the only clinics in the Tri-Cities area to offer this treatment.
We’re Here to Help
LDR brachytherapy like prostate seed implantation is a highly effective treatment for prostate cancer, but it may need to be paired with additional types of radiotherapy. For some patients, HDR brachytherapy is a better option. Dr. Choe will consult with you and take into account your health, medical history, and individual needs to determine what course of treatment is right for you.
Dealing with cancer can be overwhelming, but the team at Northwest Cancer Clinic is here to support you every step of the way. If you’re interested in learning more about brachytherapy for prostate cancer, you’ve come to the right place.
